Really-cover-miniThe Really Really Easy way to learn to play Drumkit.

This book and accompanying CD summarizes the experience that Peter has acquired over 35 years of teaching literally thousands of drum students. It is indeed the Really Really Easy way to learn to play the Drumkit. It cuts through to the essential things that you need to know to get you up and playing in the first few pages and it chops it up into tiny pieces that are really easy to digest.
In short this book WORKS!

Reading-Cover-miniRhythm Reading for all Musicians.

This is arguably the most comprehensive tutorial book of reading rhythm ever written. It starts the student out from the most basic rhythm figures and progresses through many small steps through to some of the most complex figures you will find in western music. Odd time rhythms 7/16, 17/8, poly rhythms 7:4, 9:8 etc, figures that have their roots in the Tabla rhythms of India (Think Frank Zappa, John McLaughlin). It culminates with 45 Etudes (Solo pieces) ranging from the very simple to the extremely difficult, these Etudes can be used for examination / audition pieces etc, etc.  The book comes with an audio CD of MP3 files of every single exercise in the book.

Cost: $75 plus shipping and handling.

Pitch-Black-Score-Cover-minPitch Black Score.

A full score ( Drumkit, Marimba and Bass) of an incredibly difficult piece which features the drum kit player.

Having shown and taught some of my students a chart of Frank Zappa’s “Black Page” they wanted to know if a more complex piece could be written and threw the challenge at me.

This drum part features tuplets within tuplets within tuplets and some poly-rhythmical monstrosities to twist your mind and body into places they have never been before! It is a challenge for an advanced player but is entirely playable given some work. Give it a go!

Check out the video on this site of 15 year old Mark just nailing this piece to the wall! (However, he did work through the “Rhythm Reading for all Musicians” book, available on this page) before he took this one on.

Cost: $15 plus shipping and handling.
